The Americans took a much-needed rest day and will be fully prepared for the remainder of the World Cup. That may be bad news for Shakira Austin, who did not play in Team USA’s last game against China.
If the Americans’ schedule was heavy in the beginning, it is now lighter. Korea was regarded as the worst team in Group A, although they had just defeated Bosnia and Herzegovina by a score of 99-66.
Lee Seul Kang, who was on the Washington Mystics’ training camp roster this spring, leads the Koreans. Expect the Americans to concentrate their efforts on silencing her in what should be an easy victory.
A’ja Wilson, the team’s last player to arrive, finished with a game-high 20 points and eight rebounds. Wilson’s Las Vegas Aces teammate and fellow 2022 WBA champion Chelsea Gray ended her debut with 12 points, six rebounds, and three assists. Alyssa Thomas of the Connecticut Sun, who had back-to-back triple-doubles in the WNBA Finals, was one of them. Thomas was the third USA player to score in double digits (12 points) in her team-leading 32 minutes on the field, and she also had eight rebounds and five assists.
The United States is undefeated after three tough games against China, Puerto Rico, and Belgium. It will be interesting to see how Reeve and her staff handle the next two preliminary games now that the USA has won the first of four quarterfinal spots. The top three teams from Group A are likely to be the United States, China, and Belgium. The fourth and final squad to advance to the quarterfinals might be either Puerto Rico, South Korea, or Bosnia and Herzegovina. South Korea must now win their match against the United States in order to advance to the quarter-finals.
