Looking to run the Berlin Marathon? This is the guide for you! Learn all about the world’s fastest marathon course and how to prepare for the 2022 race. Here’s everything you need to know about the 2022 marathon in the German capital, which features the world’s fastest track.

All information About Berlin Marathon 2022

This year’s marathon season (at long last) begins on September 25 with the 48th annual Berlin Marathon. This quick and flat course through the German capital has produced 11 world records, more than any other marathon. While Kenya’s Eliud Kipchoge recorded the fastest (official) marathon ever in Berlin in 2018, Ethiopia’s Kenenisa Bekele ran the second-best time ever in Berlin in 2019.

The 2022 Berlin Marathon course, professional athlete fields, race day information, streaming possibilities, and more are detailed here for those who will compete in this year’s marathon or hope to compete in future years.

Where can I get information on watching the Berlin Marathon online?

The Berlin Marathon may be viewed from anywhere in the world thanks to the live streaming provided by a number of websites. The race will be live-streamed for free on Watch Athletics, while membership is required to watch it on FloTrack, also on  ESPN Star+ and FuboTV

Getting Acquainted with the Berlin Marathon Route

The city of Berlin is a popular destination for runners seeking personal bests. Berlin is the fastest route; it’s where a human can show off their potential to push the limits, Kipchoge stated earlier this year. The flat, wide roads and mild temperatures make this course ideal for runners of all abilities.

With a total elevation gain and loss of only 241 feet, the Berlin course is the flattest of the World Marathon Majors. The steepest section of the trail (miles 16–20) has an elevation gain of fewer than 30 feet at its steepest point. Berlin’s flat track helps, but the city also uses pacemakers to ensure that the world’s best runners can go as fast as they can during the annual marathon.

Because of the absence of pacemakers, the outcomes of the New York City and Boston Marathons are determined solely by the strategies of the competing runners. Over the years, however, the elite runners’ quick speeds in the Berlin Marathon have become contagious, motivating runners of all ages to set their sights on the German capital.

While the race began and ended in West Berlin, it has expanded to include East Berlin neighborhoods such as Charlottenburg, Tiergarten, Moabit, Mitte, Friedrichshain, Kreuzberg, Neukölln, Schöneberg, Friedenau, and Zehlendorf. The Reichstag, Siegessäule, Berliner Dom, and Potsdamer Platz are just a few of the popular tourist destinations you’ll race by on your way to your destination. More than 60 different stages are set up along the route, and live music is presented at all the major sights.

Although a map is available for download from the race website, it is important to note that it does not include any street names or landmarks but rather only kilometer markers. The chart indicates that water and refreshment stops (including Maurten Drink Mix 160) begin at the 5K mark.

Which Professionals Will Be Competing in This Year’s Berlin Marathon?

Eliud Kipchoge, who set a new world record by 1 minute 18 seconds in 2018, will be the most famous runner at the 2022 Berlin Marathon (he won twice before that as well). Do you think he can break 2:00:00 on a certified course this year? The Ethiopian Guye Adola, who has clocked a time of 2:03:46, appears to be his main rival.

Women’s race favorites include Kenya’s Nancy Jelagat Meto (2:19:31), who placed second at last year’s Berlin Marathon, and American record holders Keira d’Amato (2:19:12) and Sara Hall (2:20:32), who both placed in the top 10 in the World Athletics Championships marathon.

Swiss wheelchair racer Manuela Schär, who won the event last year, will be defending her championship this time around, while fellow countryman Marcel Hug will be competing for the men’s title.

The number of participants in this year’s general race is unknown.

The Berlin Marathon is one of the World Marathon Majors, which are the largest and most prestigious marathons in the world. After canceling the 2020 event and restricting participation to about 25,000 athletes in 2021 owing to Covid-19, race organizers anticipate more than 45,000 runners from about 150 countries to toe the starting line this year. There were 44,064 participants in the last marathon held before the pandemic.

When does the starting gun go off?

The Berlin Marathon also begins in waves, like the other major marathons. These are the official beginning times:
