Mirabai Chanu will lead the four-member Indian contingent at the World Weightlifting Championships 2022, which begins Monday in Bogota, Colombia.

The world championships feature weightlifting competitions in 20 different divisions. The Olympic weight divisions include five men’s weight classes (61kg, 73kg, 89kg, 102kg, +102kg) and five women’s weight classes (49kg, 59kg, 71kg, 81kg, +81kg).

The world championships are the first in a series of qualifying events for the Olympic Games in Paris in 2024. Weightlifters competing in the ten Olympic weightlifting categories (five men and five women) will be able to earn noteworthy Olympic Qualification Ranking (OQR) points based on their performances at the world championships.

The OQR will be determined by the athletes’ best total results (snatch + clean and jerk) in the qualifying competitions. After the qualification cycle concludes in April 2024, the top ten athletes based on OQR will be given Olympic quotas, with one highest-ranked athlete per country in each weight category.

Mirabai Chanu will compete in her first international match since winning the Commonwealth Games 2022 in August. In Colombia, the 2017 world champion will compete in her favorite women’s 49kg weight class. Watch the World Weightlifting Championships 2022 live on Olympics.com.

Commonwealth Games 2022 gold medalist Achinta Sheuli, Gold Games silver medalist Bindyarani Devi, and Gold Games bronze medalist Gurdeep Singh will all compete at the world championships.

Achinta Sheuli will continue to compete in the men’s 73kg weight class, which is an Olympic weight class for Paris 2024.

Bindyarani Devi earned a silver medal in women’s 55kg at the Commonwealth Games. However, she will compete in 59kg instead because her favorite weight division does not fit inside the Olympic weight division. Gurdeep Singh will compete in the men’s +109kg non-Olympic weight division.

Jeremy Lalrinnunga, the Indian youth Olympic champion, will not compete in the World Weightlifting Championships after failing to heal from a lower back and thigh ailment.

The World Weightlifting Championships 2022 were initially set for Chongqing, China, but were relocated to Colombia owing to the COVID-19 outbreak in China. The championships will come to an end on December 16.
