The 2022 San Diego Open is one of two tournaments on the WTA tour this week. The majority of the best women’s players have gathered here to compete, primarily to secure their places at the WTA Finals.

The San Diego Open, a new WTA 500 event, begins on Monday, October 10. For the first time since 2013, the WTA tour is conducting a tour-level event in San Diego. The tournament will be contested on an outdoor hard court at the Barnes Tennis Center, and the Dunlop Grand Prix Regular Duty ball will be used. San Diego includes a 28-player singles draw as well as 16-team doubles draw. The qualification will begin on Saturday, October 8. Six of the top 10 players are competing in the season’s last WTA 500 event. No. 20 Petra Kvitova is the lowest-ranked player with a direct entry into the main draw.
Along with Swiatek, the event features 12 additional players from the top 20. Coco Gauff, Madison Keys, Jessica Pegula, and Danielle Collins lead the American challenge in San Diego.

This is the tournament’s first year on the WTA tour and is a WTA 500 event. The arena has also held a couple of editions of the ATP Tour for men.
