After many years as the championship’s only mixed-surface event, Spain’s fixture, 2022 Rally Catalunya, will now only be on sealed-surface roads. The fast and smooth circuit-like asphalt in the Costa Daurada hills, south of Barcelona, encourages attacking driving while smart corner-cutting saves crucial tenths. It is critical to keep everything neat.
With a heady mix of Asphalt rally action, gorgeous Autumn weather, a bustling coastal rally HQ, and stunning scenery, this is unquestionably one of the WRC 2022 Rally Catalunya -Rally de España calendar’s highlights. With packages starting at just over £200 per person and many ‘low-cost flights, this is the most economical (and enjoyable!) of the WRC events.
Rally Travel will ensure you get to the heart of the action by providing all ‘Self-Drive’ tour clients with our proprietary Rally Info Pack, which includes complete information and GPS coordinates for all stages, as well as a one-of-a-kind A3 size color map book!
We now offer a great Escorted Tour (Tour Code CATGOLD) for individuals who would rather not drive themselves to the rally stages each day and keep the walking and waiting to a minimum!

2022 Rally Catalunya Service Pack:
Located on the Salou holiday resort’s outskirts, directly near the PortAventura World theme park, one of Europe’s most prominent fun attractions. Mechanics work on their vehicles in front of rollercoasters and water rides.
2022 Rally Catalunya Stages:
- Friday’s first leg north of long-time rally headquarters Salou begins with two brand-new speed tests at Els Omells – Malda (10.66km) and Serra de la Llena (10.66km) (11.93km). They are followed by Les Garrigues Altes (21.44 km) and La Pobla-Riba-Roja (17.72 km), both of which use roads that are driven in the opposite direction, as in 2021.
- To make matters worse, there will be no service between the morning and afternoon loops. After the first quartet of stages, the only respite for competitors will be a tire change in Flix. The eight tests total 123.50km.
- Saturday will be more routine. The unmodified Savalla (14.08 km) and the rally’s longest stage, El Montmell (24.40 km), sandwich the new Querol-Les Pobles (20.57 km).
- Morning and afternoon races over the same roads are separated at Salou’s PortAventura World before the day concludes with the famous 2.15km street stage along Salou’s seafront. The six steps total 120.25 kilometers.
- Sunday’s conclusion consists of two loops of Pratdip (11.78km) and Riudecanyes (11.78km) (16.35km). The former is 2km longer than last year. At the same time, Riudecanyes is famous for the roundabout at Coll de la Teixeta, where drivers perform a 360° donut in front of massive hillside spectators.
- The Wolf Power Stage is formed by the second pass of Riudecanyes, with bonus points awarded to the top five teams. The four stages comprise 56.26km, bringing the rally to 300.01km on a 1405.03km route.
Iconic Stage
- Friday’s Riba-Roja test is fiendishly tricky and runs in the opposite direction to 2021. It’s pretty twisting and undulating, with a hairpin drop and severe braking at the finish.
2022 Rally Catalunya -Rally de España Challenge:
- Fast timings necessitate a fluid style and racing lines. Aggression might add unnecessary seconds to the clock.
- Cutting corners is critical for saving critical tenths. As they explode back onto the asphalt at the exit of corners, drivers must avoid punctures on the roadside.
- As driver after motorist scrapes and drags gravel and mud onto the asphalt, the roads become increasingly unclean and slippery.
- The smooth but gritty asphalt gives decent traction, although drivers must carefully control tyre wear if temperatures are high.
- The first two stages on Friday are brand new, and crews will need to take care of their equipment with no mid-leg service.
2022 Rally Catalunya -Rally de España Car specifications:
- A setup of asphalt with low suspension settings to help cars cling to the roads.
- Pirelli’s complex compound P Zero tire will be the primary option. However, a soft compound variant for colder circumstances and the Cinturato rain tyre for extreme wet weather will also be available.
2022 Rally Catalunya -Rally de España History:
- The race was first held in 1957 and has been part of the European Championship since 1975.
- It joined the WRC in 1991 when it was situated in Lloret de Mar on the Costa Brava.
- After being relocated to Salou in 2002, it evolved into a mixed surface event in 2010 before reverting to an all-asphalt format in 2021.
- Sébastien Loeb leads the list with nine victories, eight consecutive from 2005 to 2012.
What is new in 2022 Rally Catalunya -Rally de España?
- The first two stages on Friday, Els Omells – Malda (10.66km) and Serra de la Llena (11.93km), are brand new for this year.
- The start of Saturday’s Querol-Les Pobles (20.57km) test contains a new 3km stretch.
2022 Rally Catalunya -Rally de España Highlights:
- On Saturday evening, crews will confront a tough 2.15km street test outside Salou’s coastline. It begins at the marina and proceeds into the center on sand-slickened roadways that have caught countless cars off guard over the years!
- Spend Sunday in Riudecanyes’ famed Coll de la Teixeta roundabout. Drivers perform a 360-degree donut at the roundabout, providing excellent sight from nearby mountains. Expect large numbers and an exciting environment.
