The IIHF World Junior Championships 2022: A Look Ahead:
The IIHF World Junior Championships are in the quarterfinal round. The USA will play Czechia on Wednesday, August 17, at 10:30 p.m. ET.
The USA is playing Czechia in the quarterfinal. They are both in Group B. The USA won Group B, so they are playing the four seed from Group A, Czechia. Czechia only won one game and lost two games in the group stage, while the USA went undefeated in their group stage games.
All of Wednesday’s quarterfinal games will be broadcast on NHL Network and can be streamed live on DirecTV Stream, fuboTV and other live TV services.
The World Junior Championships or “World Juniors” feature the top players under 20 years old from around the world. The 2022 Tournament is being hosted in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.
Quarterfinal 1: Finland vs. Germany – Wednesday, August 17 at 12 p.m ET
Quarterfinal 2: Sweden vs. Latvia – Wednesday, August 17 at 3:30 p.m. ET
Quarterfinal 3: Canada vs. Switzerland – Wednesday, August 17 at 7 p.m. ET
Quarterfinal 4: USA vs. Czechia Wednesday, August 17, 10:30 p.m. ET
The USA has been hunting for their first World Junior gold medal since 2017, when they defeated Canada in a shootout in the final. The Americans have won awards in three of the last five tournaments, including back-to-back bronze medals in 2020 and 2021.
This will be just the second meeting between these two countries at the World Juniors. The only other time was in 2018, when the Czech Republic won 4-3 OT.
Czechia is led by Jan Mysak, who plays professionally in the Swiss National League. He has four goals and one assist in three games. Filip Zadina is also on the roster and he’s a Detroit Red Wings prospect. He has two goals and one assist in three games.
The USA is led by Matthew Boldy, who has four goals and two assists in four games. He’s a Boston Bruins prospect. Trevor Zegras has two goals and five assists in four games. He’s an Anaheim Ducks prospect. Dylan Cozens has two goals and three assists in four games. He’s a Buffalo Sabres prospect.
Spencer Knight is the starting goaltender for the USA and he’s put up solid numbers so far, going 2-0 with a 1.50 GAA and .935 save percentage. Jan Bednar is the starter for the Czech Republic and he’s also put up good numbers, going 1-1 with a 2.01 GAA and .929 save percentage.
The winner of this game will advance to the semifinal, where they will play the winner of Canada vs. Switzerland on Friday, August 19, at 10 p.m. ET. The loser will play in the fifth-place game on Friday at 3:30 p.m. ET.
Prediction: USA 4, Czech Republic 2
NHL Network will broadcast all four quarterfinal games on Wednesday. DirecTV Stream, fuboTV and other live TV services will stream the game in the USA.
