The NASCAR Go Bowling at the Glen is always one of the most anticipated races of the year. This year’s event will take place on Sunday, August 21 and will once again be held at Watkins Glen International in New York.

Watkins Glen International:
Watkins Glen International, nicknamed “The Glen,” is an automobile racing track in Watkins Glen, New York, at the southern tip of Seneca Lake. It was long known for being the home of the United States Grand Prix, which it hosted for 20 consecutive years (1961–1980). Still, the site has been host to several other major racing events, including races in the NASCAR Cup Series, Busch/Nationwide Series and Camping World Truck Series, as well as the Finger Lakes 355 at The Glen on Labor Day Weekend. Initially, public roads in the village were used for the race course. In 1956 a permanent circuit for the race was built. In 1968 the race was extended to six hours, becoming the Watkins Glen Grand Prix. The circuit’s current layout dates to 1971, when the first two chicanes were introduced. The other changed in 1992 with the addition of the Inner Loop.
The circuit is known as the Mecca of North American road racing and is a popular venue among fans and drivers. The facility is currently owned by International Speedway Corporation and operated by NASCAR.
Watkins Glen International has hosted several Formula One races, including the United States Grand Prix (1961–1980), which it hosted for 20 consecutive years, making it one of only four sites to have held that honor (the others being Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Circuit de Monaco and Autodromo Nazionale Monza). Watkins Glen International hosted the United States Grand Prix for the first time on October 2, 1961, and continued to do so for 20 consecutive years until 1981. After a five-year absence, the U.S. Grand Prix returned to Watkins Glen in 2016 and will remain on the Formula One calendar through at least 2020.
The circuit is also home to one of North America’s premier sports car races, the Sahlen’s Six Hours of The Glen, which is run as part of the WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. In addition, Watkins Glen International hosts the Finger Lakes Wine Festival presented by Yancey’s Fancy New York Artisan Cheese over Labor Day Weekend each year.
The track features 11 turns, including the famed “esses” between Turns 5 and 6, spanning 3.4 miles (5.5 km) in length with 150 feet (46 m) of elevation change. Watkins Glen International is one of only four road courses to host the NASCAR Cup Series, Xfinity Series and Camping World Truck Series – the others being Sonoma Raceway, Road America and Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. The layout of the original road course at Watkins Glen was similar to that of Pebble Beach Golf Links as both have ocean views and several dangerous drop-offs along the racing line.
The circuit underwent several changes over the years, with the first chicane being added in 1971 and then modified in 1992. A second chicane was added in 1998 but was removed the following year. In addition, the Turn 1 hairpin was repaved and widened in 2007. The track is currently used for NASCAR and sports car racing events.
The Sahlen’s Six Hours of The Glen is a sports car endurance race held at Watkins Glen International in Watkins Glen, New York. The event’s first running took place on June 11, 1968, on the original 6.6-mile (10.6 km) road course and was won by drivers Mark Donohue and David Hobbs, driving a Porsche 907. The event has been held every year since its inception, with the exception of 1973, when it was canceled due to the oil crisis. It is currently run as part of the WeatherTech SportsCar Championship and is the longest race on that series’ schedule.
