The opening ceremony for the Lake Placid 2023 Winter World University Games will take place in one week. The world’s top university athletes will be hosted for the second time in Lake Placid and the North Country of the State of New York in the United States, the first time being in 1972.

2023 Winter World University Games Preview:

The streets of Lake Placid are alive with energy as competitors, coaches, officials, and organizers continue to gather in preparation for the commencement of the FISU Games. While women’s and men’s ice hockey, as well as snowboard cross, will begin prior to the opening ceremony, the actual start of the Lake Placid 2023 FISU Games will be on the evening of January 12th. The Olympic Center’s Herb Brooks Arena will host the celebrations, which will include performances and presentations honouring and celebrating New York’s rich sporting legacy while spotlighting the magical season that is winter.

Full competition in twelve sports will begin once the LED-powered cauldron is ignited. Alpine skiing, freestyle and freeski, snowboarding, biathlon, cross-country skiing, Nordic combined, ski jumping, curling, figure skating, ice hockey, short track speed skating, and speed skating events will be held in and around Lake Placid, as well as in Canton and Potsdam to the south and Canton and Potsdam to the north.

Nearly the course of 11 days, over 1,600 athletes from 45 nations and regions will participate in 86 medal events. The FISU World Conference, which will focus on the issue of protecting winter, will be conducted in conjunction with the FISU Games, as will other educational and cultural activities.

The countdown continues, and in a week’s time, Lake Placid and the North Country will be in the spotlight. The beginning cannot arrive soon enough!
