UFC 293 Preview

When Nigerian-born New Zealander Israel Adesanya fights American championship challenger Sean Strickland in the main event of UFC 293 on Sunday, he will have some Southern Hemisphere backing.

The battle in Sydney Olympic Park’s Qudos Bank Arena, which is across the Tasman Sea from Adesanya’s base in New Zealand, will provide the middleweight champion with an opportunity to add a submission, or tap out, to his fight results repertoire.

A submission occurs when an opponent verbally concedes the match to avoid further injury or discomfort. Adesanya’s 26 professional mixed martial arts fights include 16 knockouts, eight decisions, and two losses, but no submissions.

“What do I want out of my career?” “I definitely want a submission,” Adesanya told the reporters last week. “It may be this struggle. I’m certain he’ll wrestle. He’d be stupid not to. I’m sure he’ll try to spice it up. He’s doing the whole ‘Man dance, man dance.'”

It’s the first UFC bout in Australia’s largest city since 2017, and the second UFC card in the country this year.

Islam Makhachev retained his lightweight title in February in Perth, Western Australia, despite a strong threat from Alexander Volkanovski.

In the build-up to the title fight, which is scheduled for Saturday night in the lucrative pay-per-view TV market in North America, the 32-year-old Strickland, who has a 27-5 record, has stated that he is happy to stand and box with Adesanya, but believes his best chance is to wrestle with the champ.

Adesanya and Strickland don’t get along and have thrown barbs in the past. They were only a short distance apart, yelling, at UFC 276 in Paradise, Nevada in 2022, which started what has been a healthy rivalry.

If Adesanya wins on Sunday, there are some questions about who he will fight next.

The 34-year-old Adesanya was scheduled to face Dricus du Plessis after defeating Robert Whittaker in a No. 1 contender bout, but the South African declined the UFC 293 fight, citing the need for extra recovery time, allowing Strickland to earn the call-up.

Adesanya chastised du Plessis for passing up the opportunity to fight for the title, saying, “he (du Plessis) doesn’t call the shots, I do.”

Outside of the hexagon, the UFC battle generated headlines in New South Wales, where the state’s top senator was compelled to explain his state’s $10 million contribution to assist ensure the UFC event came to Sydney.

During a media briefing this week, Strickland made sexist and misogynistic remarks, mirroring past remarks.

Premier Chris Minns called the remarks “absolutely appalling.” However, he stated that one fighter’s “obnoxious” statements could not stain the entire sport.

The heavyweight battle between Tai Tuivasa, 30, of Sydney, and Russian Alexander Volkov, 34, is also on the main bill and will take place before the title fight. Tuivasa is 15-5 after dropping his last two fights, whereas Volkov is 36-10.

Manel Kape vs. Felipe dos Santos, Justin Tafa vs. Austen Lane, and Tyson Pedro vs. Anton Turkalj are also on the main card.
