UFC 289 Preivew:

Nunes was slated to meet Pena in a third fight in the first UFC event in Canada since 2019, but the latter withdrew out due to fractured ribs. The Nunes-Aldana fight will be broadcast on ESPN+ PPV in the United States.

Nunes made her professional debut in 2008. She joined the UFC in 2013 after competing for Strikeforce and Invicta. Following her loss to Cat Zingano in 2014, Nunes went on a 12-fight winning streak, defeating Sarah McMann, Valentina Shevchenko, Miesha Tate, Ronda Rousey, Raquel Pennington, Cris Cyborg, and Holly Holm. Nunes defeated Tate for the UFC bantamweight title in 2016 and Cyborg for the UFC featherweight title in 2018, becoming a double champion.

Pena won the title by submitting Nunes in the second round at UFC 269. Nunes, the only fighter in UFC history to defend two belts while holding them simultaneously, reclaimed the belt at UFC 277 in July 2022.

Aldana, who is ranked fifth in the UFC’s bantamweight rankings, became pro in 2012. “Robles” joined the UFC in 2016 as a former Invicta FC bantamweight championship challenger. Aldana is 7-4 in the promotion and has won two straight fights. The Mexican boxer last fought in September, when she KO’d Macy Chiasson.

In the co-main event, lightweight Charles Oliveira will face Beneil Dariush. Oliveira, a former UFC lightweight champion, earned the belt in 2021 but lost it in May 2022 after he failed to make weight against Justin Gaethje. Oliveira was defeated by Islam Makhachev via submission in his last fight for the vacant title.

Dariush is on an eight-fight winning streak and is ranked fourth in the lightweight division. His most recent fight occurred in October, when he defeated Mateusz Gamrot.
