The sports activities ministry on Thursday introduced the discontinuation of the Dhyan Chand Award for lifetime achievement from this 12 months onwards and the introduction of the Arjuna Award Lifetime instead in a bid to “rationalise” the varied sporting honours of the nation. Instituted in 2002, the Dhyan Chand Lifetime Award, named after hockey wizard Main Dhyan Chand, is given to people in disciplines which are a part of the Olympic Video games, Paralympic Video games, Asian Video games and Commonwealth Video games, amongst others.

In 2023, the award was given to former shuttler Manjusha Kanwar, ex-hockey exponent Vineet Kumar and kabaddi participant Kavitha Selvaraj.

“The assorted schemes for sports activities awards have been rationalised whereby Arjuna Award (Lifetime) has been launched rather than Dhyan Chand Award. To recognise the efforts of coaches at grassroots/growth degree, they’re now eligible for the Dronacharya Award,” stated a ministry assertion.

“The Arjuna Award (Lifetime) has been launched and will probably be given for all times time contribution to sports activities growth.

“Additional, to acknowledge the Khelo India scheme, the Maulana Abdul Kalam Azad (MAKA) Trophy will probably be given to the College for Total Prime Efficiency in Khelo India College Video games,” it added.

The final date for making use of for the nationwide sports activities awards for 2024 is November 14.
