The 2022/23 Ligue 1 season will be the 85th edition of the top-flight football competition in France and is scheduled to begin on 13 August 2022.
As the 2021/22 Ligue 1 season ends, we look at what to expect from the 2022/23 campaign.
Introduction to Ligue 1:
It will be the first Ligue 1 season with 36 teams after the league increased from 20 to 24 teams in 2002 and then to 32 teams in 2017. So this will also be the first Ligue 1 season since 1959 not to feature any newly promoted teams, as all four clubs promoted from Ligue 2 for the 2021–22 season (Lens, Nancy, Rennes, and Troyes) were relegated back down at the end of that campaign. The league will instead feature two newly formed sides: Racing Club de Paris, which was formed in 2020 following the folding of Red Star FC, and Owasco FC, which was founded in 2021.
A total of 380 matches will be played throughout the season, with each team playing 34 games. The regular season is set to conclude on 22 May 2023. Following that, the championship playoff will feature the top four teams in the league table and will be played over two legs, with the first leg taking place on 26 May and the second leg on 29 May. The winner of the playoff will be crowned as Ligue 1 champions.
So far, no team has announced their withdrawal from the 2022/23 Ligue 1 season. However, one team, RC Strasbourg, has declared bankruptcy and will have to go through a liquidation process. As a result, Strasbourg will be relegated to the second tier of French football, Ligue 2, for the first time since 1979.
The 2021/22 Ligue 1 season will be the first in which teams will play each other three times instead of twice, meaning there will be more chances for upsets and surprising results. So this could make for an exciting and unpredictable season, with any top teams capable of winning the title.
A look at the teams:
Paris Saint-Germain is again the favorite to win the league, but they will face stiff competition from Marseille, AS Monaco, and Lyon.
Players to watch out for:
Very big name like Leonel Messi, Neymar jr, Kylian Mbappe, Lucas Paqueta etc.
Which teams are most likely to be relegated from Ligue 1 in 2022/23?
As the 2022/23 season approaches, there are a few teams in Ligue 1 that are at risk of relegation. These teams include Toulouse, Dijon, and Nantes. While it is impossible to predict exactly who will be relegated, these three teams are certainly in danger of playing in the second division next season.
Toulouse has been on a downward spiral for a few years now and they seem to be stuck in the bottom half of the table. They have failed to make any significant improvements to their squad and their financial situation is not great. As a result, it is very likely that they will be relegated in 2022/23.
Dijon was promoted to Ligue 1 in 2018 and they have managed to stay afloat since then. However, they are not a very strong team and they will probably struggle next season. If they don’t make any significant signings in the summer, it is very likely that they will be relegated.
Nantes has been a yo-yo club in recent years, being relegated from Ligue 1 in 2017 and then promoted back in 2019. They had a decent season last year, but they are not a very strong team. If they don’t make any significant signings or improvements, it is very likely that they will be relegated once again in 2022/23.
Here are our predictions, tips, and betting odds for the 2022/23 Ligue 1 season:
PSG to win the league at 1/2
Marseille to finish in the top three at 11/4
AS Monaco to be relegated at 5/1
Lyon to win the UEFA Champions League at 25/1
As the 2022/23 season of Ligue 1 approaches, fans can expect another year of top-tier football action. Some of the best teams in France will once again compete for the title, and there is sure to be plenty of drama throughout the campaign. Who will come out on top? Only time will tell.
