If you haven’t had your fill of super-grandmaster chess with the Saint Louis Rapid & Blitz this weekend, the Saint Louis Chess Club presents the 2022 Sinquefield Cup!

The opening ceremony for this annual, invite-only online elite event takes place on Thursday, September 1, with the first round beginning at 1 p.m. CT on Friday, September 2. If playoffs are required, rounds will be extended until September 12.

The event follows a round-robin style, with ten of the world’s best players vying for $350,000 in prizes. All games will be played in 90 minutes for the first 40 moves and 30 minutes for the rest of the game, with a 30-second increment starting with move 1.
The Sinquefield Cup, a feature of every Grand Chess Tour since its inception in 2015, is an essential component of the GCT circuit. The event will be held at the Saint Louis Chess Club from September 2 to 12. Magnus Carlsen leads a lineup that includes eight ‘tour regulars.’ The regulars will compete for an additional $175,000 in prize money designated for the series’ top three players.

The Sinquefield Cup, sponsored yearly by the Saint Louis Chess Club in America’s chess city of Saint Louis, continues its history of classical format that will finish the 2022 Grand Chess Tour. As the final tour stop, this will be the last chance for contestants to collect points for a chance to be proclaimed Grand Chess Tour champion.

The penultimate leg of the season will include eight full-tour players and two wildcards, namely world champion Magnus Carlsen and US rising star Hans Niemann, who stepped in after Richard Rapport had to withdraw.

The top three players in the tour standings will each receive an additional $175,000 ($100, $50, and $25k for first, second, and third, respectively). A GCT playoff will be held on September 12 if there is a tie for first place in the overall standings.

Maxime Vachier-Lagrave leads the tour standings with 2612 points after four tournaments in the season. Alireza Firouzja is right behind him, having 2512 points to his name.
