Sebastian Fundora vs. Carlos Ocampo tonight on Showtime as part of a six-fight event. Sebastian Fundora, who is 6-foot-6, is taller than many heavyweight boxers. On the other hand, Fundora is a WBC interim junior middleweight champion who will defend his title against Carlos Ocampo on Saturday night (Showtime, 10 p.m. ET).
Despite towering above most 154-pounders, Fundora (19-0, 13 KO) rarely employs his 80-inch reach in the manner that boxing purists might expect. That is to say, Fundora is not very good jabber. In fact, Fundora landed fewer jabs than he ate in his most recent fight, despite having a 6-inch reach advantage over 5-foot-9 Erickson Lubin. Fundora defeated Lubin after Lubin’s corner stopped the fight after nine rounds of exciting action in which both combatants were knocked down.
The battle against Lubin was a near-perfect representation of what makes Fundora such a great fighter. With his long arms delivering uppercuts and hooks from unusual angles, he has converted his height into a tool in a wild inside-brawling style. To use that approach, Fundora had to have a chin that could withstand that type of brawling-over technique.
“I’m not sure if they assume tall people can’t box or anything,” Fundora explained. “Tall people are expected to take advantage of their height. That’s something I could do. I, too, want to entertain. This is a sport where you want to witness knockouts and injuries. That’s just the way the game is played.”
Ocampo (34-1, 22 KO) appears to be a great opponent for Fundora to continue generating excitement. Ocampo is most recognized for his 2018 welterweight title fight with Errol Spence Jr. Spence won the battle in the last seconds of the first round.
Ocampo has won 12 fights since his loss to Spence, maintaining a busy schedule. In fact, Ocampo’s bout with Fundora will be his fourth in 2022. Ocampo picked up a strong win two bouts ago with a ninth-round TKO of Mikael Zewski, which he backed up with a June win over journeyman fighter Vicente Martin Rodriguez, who has won just one of his last eight fights.
The rest of the broadcast card features Carlos Adames vs. Juan Macias Montiel for the vacant interim WBC middleweight title, as well as a rematch between champion Fernando Martinez and Jerwin Ancajas for the IBF super flyweight title. Martinez won the championship in February with a major upset over Ancajas, and he enters the rematch as the favorite after a dominant performance in the first fight.

Sebastian Fundora vs. Carlos Ocampo Prediction:
Fundora’s capacity to compete at the highest level of the sport is still being questioned. He has consistently requested a bout with division kingpin Jermell Charlo, and a victory over Ocampo may be enough to secure the fight. A battle with Charlo may be a case of “be cautious what you wish for” for Fundora, whose reckless brawling style may not hold up against one of the world’s top fighters.

Ocampo, on the other hand, is a different story; his flaws complement Fundora’s qualities. Fundora may not be on Spence’s level of ability, but the way Spence was able to crush Ocampo on the inside during their brief encounter implies Fundora should be able to use his leverage and unique technique to work over a fighter who isn’t used to competing at the top of the sport. Fundora is expected to finish the bout in the middle rounds.
