Saul Canelo Alvarez vs. Gennadiy GGG Golovkin 3: Date, Time Everything You Need to Know

Saul Canelo Alvarez and Gennadiy GGG Golovkin 3 are set to face off in the ring for a third time on September 17 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. This highly anticipated rematch has been dubbed “The Fight of the Century” and has boxing fans on the edge of their seats.

Alvarez and Golovkin first met in September of 2017, with the fight ending in a controversial split decision draw. Many felt that Golovkin had done enough to win the fight, and so the stage was set for a rematch one year later. The second fight took place on May 5, 2018, and once again ended in a controversial decision, this time with Alvarez being awarded a majority decision victory.

Now, the two men will settle the score once and for all in what promises to be an epic battle.

After 12 awful rounds against a sluggish Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., a 120-108 shutout on all three judges’ scorecards, 20,501 fans had had enough of platitudes and excuses.

“I showed I could move, box, and do everything,” Canelo declared after the bout, to a mix of cheers and boos, a little trickle of perspiration the only indication he had been in a prizefight. “Against a bigger, stronger fighter, I can do all of those things.”

Their rivalry has been one of the best in contemporary boxing history, but fans have had to wait for a third and final fight. They will now go toe-to-toe under the lights in Sin City, and it should be a thriller.

Canelo, who lost his WBA light heavyweight title fight to Dmitry Bivol in May, will defend his super middleweight crowns.

Golovkin has only fought four fights since his loss to the Mexican, most recently defeating Ryota Murata in Japan.

It was a fair evaluation in several aspects. Alvarez (49-1-1, 34 KOs) had spent the previous 47 minutes smashing his opponent’s face with a detached professional perfection that cemented his place among the greats.

When his alleged opponent refused to participate, he threw himself into the ring, trying to spark some action for the crowd who had paid hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars to see a bout billed as the next in a long line of great battles between Mexican warriors.

Canelo made an appearance on the front lines. Chavez Jr. never emerged from the struggle that seems to rage in his head all the time. Canelo had fired twice as many punches as Chavez and landed more than three times as many hits towards the end of the bout. Boxing has once again over-promised and under-delivered.

What occurred during Saul Canelo Alvarez vs. Gennadiy GGG Golovkin II?

It meant that the somewhat friendly atmosphere around the initial fight had vanished, much like Vanes Martirosyan, whom Golovkin dispatched in a two-round thrashing on the May date earmarked for himself and Canelo.

The suspension expired in August, and the pair met again 364 days later at the same T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

The added acrimony did not detract from another outstanding boxing performance by both men, who appeared made to fight one another.

You could argue for either man to win, with GGG outlanding Canelo 234-202 total, but Canelo hitting the target with 143 power punches to 116 and doing considerably more work to the body than his opponent.

Canelo was declared the new unified middleweight champion by majority decision with scores of 115-113, 115-113, and 114-114.

In a third bout, would Saul Canelo Alvarez vs. Gennadiy GGG Golokin 3 be the favorite?

Golovkin may have been angry once more, but there was no nonsense like Byrd’s efforts the second time around. If there was a gap between the fighters in the first bout, Canelo had filled it.

GGG is concerned because Canelo has continued to progress while the 39-year-old has stalled and possibly regressed slightly.

There was little to read into victories over Steve Rolls and Kamil Szeremeta, which came either side of a spectacular middleweight title fight with Sergiy Derevyanchenko at Madison Square Garden.

With a ninth-round victory over Ryota Murata in April, Golovkin has fought four times in the four years since the second Canelo fight, with the pandemic having a role in periods of inactivity.

On the other side, if you’re the most bankable name in the sport and want to win world titles in different weight classes, fights are more likely to be made.

Canelo won seven consecutive fights between dethroning Golovkin and losing to Bivol, and he is largely regarded as one of the top pound-for-pound fighters.

He has already won the light-heavyweight belt from Bivol’s countrymen Sergey Kovalev, and he has defeated undefeated champions Callum Smith, Billy Joe Saunders, and Caleb Plant to become the undisputed king of super-middleweight.

A third bout with Golovkin will be held at 168 pounds, with all four major belts on the line. GGG toyed with the idea of facing Carl Froch early in his career, but he has never struggled to stay within the middleweight limit.

The ability of a deadly puncher to carry a few more pounds may be useful, but it is difficult to avoid the impression that Golovkin’s greatest chances of defeating Canelo have already passed him by.

Saul Canelo Alvarez vs. Gennadiy GGG Golovkin 3 Preview:

The first point to consider is the fact that both fighters are in their prime. Alvarez is 28 years old, while Golovkin is 36. However, age is just a number, and both men have proven time and time again that they have what it takes to compete at the highest level.

In terms of experience, both fighters have over 50 professional fights under their belts. However, Alvarez has the edge in terms of world title fights, with 15 to Golovkin’s 12. Additionally, Alvarez has fought some of the biggest names in boxing, including Floyd Mayweather, Miguel Cotto, and Amir Khan. Golovkin, on the other hand, has yet to fight a true superstar.

The second point to consider is the styles of both fighters. Alvarez is a skilled boxer who uses his speed and movement to his advantage. Golovkin, on the other hand, is a power puncher who looks to overwhelm his opponents with his size and strength.

In their first fight, Alvarez used his movement to avoid Golovkin’s power shots and picked his moments to counterpunch. Golovkin, for his part, was patient and methodical, looking to wear Alvarez down with body shots. In the end, the judges were split on who deserved the victory.

In their second fight, Alvarez once again used his movement to avoid Golovkin’s power shots. However, he was also more aggressive, looking to take the fight to Golovkin. Golovkin, for his part, was once again patient and methodical. In the end, Alvarez was awarded the victory by a majority decision.

The third and final fight between Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin promises to be an epic battle. Both men are in their prime and have the experience and skillset to compete at the highest level. It is sure to be a fight that boxing fans will remember for years to come.
