On February 18 at California’s Fox Theater Pomona, Luis Nery vs Azat Hovhannisyan Will face each other. Mexican southpaw Luis Nery will face Azat Hovhannisyan, a fighter with an equally up-and-down record.
Dazn will be the only streaming service to show the entire 12-round fight and all of the action from the undercard.
In August of 2017, Nery (33-1, 25 KOs) stunned the boxing world with a brutal fourth-round stoppage of long-reigning bantamweight champion Shinsuke Yamanaka. However, his reputation took a hit after he tested positive for the banned substance Zilpaterol. After an investigation, the WBC still recognized him as champion, but Ring Magazine stripped him of his title.
Nery weighed in at three pounds over the 118-pound limit, invalidating his TKO-2 victory in a rematch with Yamanaka. This time, however, Nery’s stock plummeted after the WBC stripped him of his championship.
The star from Tijuana got back on track with four consecutive knockout victories before making the jump to super-bantamweight. Nery won the 122-pound WBC title in September 2020 after defeating Aaron Alameda over the course of 12 rounds.
Nery’s time as champion was cut short, unfortunately. In only eight months, he suffered his first professional loss at the hands of the relentless Brandon Figueroa in the seventh round via stoppage. Nery had to go back to the drawing board. The 28-year-old has had two victories under his belt since then and is gunning for a shot at the world title again.
Former world title challenger Hovhannisyan, 34, has a record of 21-3, 17 KOs. Despite two early-career defeats, he won eight straight to challenge then-WBC bantamweight champion Rey Vargas in May of 2018. With a unanimous decision after 12 rounds, Vargas was declared the victor.
The Armenian fighter fighting out of the United States is currently on a seven-fight winning streak, but his opponents have been of questionable quality. If he were to defeat “Pantera” Nery, it would be the most significant victory of his career.

Luis Nery vs Azat Hovhannisyan Preview
Nery and Hovhannisyan, two contenders for the Preview Junior featherweight title, both come to the table with an offensive mindset and formidable punching power. Nery, a former two-division champion from Mexico, is currently in the process of rebuilding after a rough 2021 and 2022 in which he was stopped in seven rounds by a bigger and stronger Brandon Figueroa in a 122-pound title-unification bout and then defeated Carlos Castro by an unconvincing split decision.
In October of last year, he fought at 130 pounds and knocked out the less dangerous David Carmona in the third round. Since losing a unanimous decision to then-122-pound titleholder Rey Vargas in 2018, Armenian-born Los Angeles resident Hovhannisyan has won seven consecutive fights, rarely failing to entertain the crowd. In April of last year, he competed on the Ryan Garcia-Emmanuel Tagoe card and knocked out Dagoberto Aguero in two rounds.

A former bantamweight champion, Nery (33-1, 25 KO) has had one of the sport’s more controversial runs since bursting onto the global scene with a TKO-4 win over Shinsuke Yamanaka in 2017. However, he has been a top fighter at both 118 and 122 pounds. A stoppage loss to Brandon Figueroa in 2021 was his only defeat, and he has since won two consecutive bouts, first against Carlos Castro in early 2022 and then against David Carmona in a 130-pound stay-busy in Mexico last October.
The 28-year-old southpaw is the clear favourite, but Hovhannisyan (21-3, 17 KO) is a hard-hitting fighter who will be more than game. He is also the natural 122-pounder.
