Jose Zepeda vs Regis Prograis Preview
In 2018, Prograis advanced to the semi-finals of the World Boxing Super Series after defeating Terry Flanagan. He knocked out Kiryl Relikh in April of 2019 to claim the WBA belt. Prograis fought Taylor for the WBA, IBF, and The Ring belts, but ultimately lost by majority decision. Prograis has been diligently trying to regain his former prestige ever since.
In an interview with The Ring, Prograis said, “I haven’t been a champion since 2019, therefore I’ve been training exclusively for this specific fight, to be a world champion.” To this day, I have not deviated from 140. Although I was offered a higher purse by moving up to 147 pounds, I turned them down because all I wanted was to win the world title at 140 and become the first two-division world champion in history.
I’ve been preparing for this fight for the past three years, so all those bouts I’ve had in that time were really just warmups for the real deal. Thank goodness I finally get to fight, and I intend to make the most of this chance while I have it.
During his career, Zepeda has won two gold medals. As a lightweight contender in 2015, he was knocked out by Flanagan and ultimately lost the WBO championship. In 2019, Jose Ramirez won the WBC junior welterweight title with a unanimous decision over him. After that, Zepeda went 5-0 with a no-contest and eventually won the WBC Silver junior welterweight belt.
After being accused of hitting a 40-year-old man at a boxing gym a few weeks before the fight, Zepeda’s mental state will be something to monitor. ESPN reports that no charges have been brought since there was neither video evidence nor credible eyewitnesses to the alleged attack. A citation was given to Zepeda pending the outcome of the investigation.
