Emanuel Navarrete vs Liam Wilson Preview

This Friday, February 3, former two-division world champion Emanuel Navarrete (36-1, 30 KOs) will fight #3 Liam Wilson for the vacant WBO super featherweight title at the Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale, Arizona on ESPN, ESPN Deportes, and ESPN+. The show will begin at 9:00 p.m. Eastern time. The 28-year-old Navarrete is fighting the relatively unknown Australian Wilson (11-1, 7 KOs) in the main event in an attempt to become a three-division world champion.

A battle between Oscar Valdez and Navarrete, which he has expressed an interest in, and Navarrete would be far more exciting than the one scheduled for this Friday. Although Navarette has won world titles in two different weight classes, only Isaac Dogboe’s name appears on his résumé.

Navarrete has fought the likes of Ruben Villa, Christopher Diaz, and Joet Gonzalez during his 11-year career. So, there you have it. Only four people are listed, and they don’t have any special abilities.

Many boxing fans predict that Valdez will destroy Navarrete in their upcoming fight. Navarrete has never beaten anyone and had a tough time beating Villa and Gonzalez. Those men were a constant source of worry for Navarrete. If Shakur Stevenson still had the WBO super featherweight title, Navarrete probably wouldn’t move up in weight to challenge the title. It’s clear that Shakur is superior to Navarrete and would easily defeat him in a fight.

Wilson has been a professional boxer for five years, yet in that time, he has managed to win over nobody of note, leading the World Boxing Organization to rate him as their #3 contender at 130 pounds. In 2021, Joe Noynay knocked out Wilson in the fifth round of their boxing match. Although Wilson won a rematch in April of last year by technical knockout in the second round, it doesn’t seem reasonable that an opponent of that calibre knocked him out.

Wilson won a unanimous decision over Matias Carlos Adrian Rueda in June last year. The bout went the distance. Fight fans may recall Rueda’s 2016 bout against Oscar Valdez. In the second round, Valdez knocked out Rueda with relative ease. Wilson’s talent level, or lack thereof, is best illustrated by the fact that he only narrowly defeated Rueda the previous year.

The main support match pits undefeated light welterweight contender Arnold Barboza Jr. against former two-division world champion Jose “Sniper” Pedraza, and the undercard is packed with great fights.
