There will likely be fireworks this weekend when Canelo Alvarez vs John Ryder square off in the ring.
On May 6, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez will defend his world super-middleweight belt at the Arena Mexico in Mexico City against John Ryder. Now that we know who will be fighting on the undercard before Alvarez’s highly anticipated return, we can expect a rowdy crowd at the Estadio Akron in Guadalajara. Canelo hasn’t fought in his homeland since 2011.
When Julio Cesar Martinez defends his WBC flyweight title against Panama’s Ronal Batista, another world title will be on the line. Martinez is aiming to defend the championship he earned in December 2019 for the fifth time in a row. In addition, Gabriel Gollaz Valenzuela will be fighting Steve Spark for the WBA Inter-Continental super lightweight title.

Canelo Alvarez vs John Ryder Preview
When he faces John Ryder at Akron Stadium, the Mexican superstar will be going for victory number 59 in his professional career.
One of the finest fighters of this age, Ryder, will have to face up against thousands of Mexican fans as Eddy Reynoso’s fighter puts all four super middleweight championships on the line.
Canelo, the heavy favourite to win, wants to face the undefeated British fighter so he can exact revenge for his loss to Dmitry Bivol at 175 pounds.
Canelo agreed to fight the gorilla after seeing him defeat former world champion Daniel Jacobs and, more recently, Zach Parker.
Canelo Alvarez, the best name in boxing, will defend his undisputed super middleweight title against John Ryder of the United Kingdom on May 6 at the Akron Stadium in Zapopan, Mexico. In the United States, the 12-round fight and any further action on the undercard will be shown via pay-per-view (PPV).
That wouldn’t be David Benavidez. Clearly, not Jermall Charlo. Not Artur Beterbiev. Not a cruiserweight division promotion. Even though Ryder has a respectable record (32-5, 18 KOs), critics have spent weeks calling this fight a “walkover” or a “mismatch” because of Ryder’s diminutive stature.
Canelo, 32, who just had surgery on his left hand, is dismissing the criticism and keeping his mind on the task at hand. As for his claim that he has learned from his mistakes, he seems to be implying that Bivol was underappreciated before he won by unanimous decision against the Mexican star back in May.
Critics aren’t the only ones who think we’ve seen the best of Canelo already, though. Ryder himself hinted that the former pound-for-pound king had begun a steady slide before their battle was even confirmed.
Considering the talent gap and the fight’s remote location, Ryder may need more than Canelo to be less than amazing to win. The common belief is that a miracle is required for the English southpaw.
