The Japan Open has been a regular pit stop on the men’s circuit since its debut in 1973. It was previously known as the Tokyo Outdoor Grand Prix and was a part of the Grand Prix Tennis Tour until 1989. It has since joined the ATP Tour and has been categorized as an ATP 500 competition.

The ATP circuit will return to Tokyo after a three-year break, as the country’s capital will host the 2022 Japan Open from October 3-9.
