Dern vs. Yan Fight Preview:
On Saturday night, Dern vs. Yan will enter the UFC Octagon to establish themselves as possible players in the women’s strawweight title scenario. The 115-pound bout leads the UFC Fight Night event from Las Vegas’ UFC Apex (ESPN+, 7 p.m. ET).
The match is crucial for Xiaonan (15-3). The Chinese native will enter the cage on a two-bout losing streak, having suffered a TKO loss to Carla Esparza and a split decision loss to Marina Rodriguez in a battle many thought Xiaonan deserved to win. Those defeats came after a 12-fight winning streak, which included six victories in the Octagon.
After seven knockout victories in her first ten fights, Xiaonan has not won a single stoppage in the nine matches (including one no-contest in 2016).

Dern (12-2) also lost to Rodriguez recently, by decision in October 2021. In April, she bounced back with a split decision victory over Tecia Torres. The fight with Torres was a tight one, not just on the official scorecards but also in the eyes of the media, with Torres receiving slightly more than half of the media scores collected by MMADecisions.com.
Dern has never won a knockout, but she is a devastating finisher. Dern, a jiu-jitsu champion, has transferred her submission talents to MMA, with seven of her 12 career victories ending with her opponent tapping out.
Mackenzie Dern (12-2) is one of the sport’s most prolific grapplers. Dern’s most recent fight was a split decision victory against Tecia Torres at UFC 273 in April. The former Brazilian jiu-jitsu world champion has won five of her previous six fights and hopes to advance to a significant fight on Saturday with a win.
Xianonan Yan (15-3) is a ferocious attacker eager to avenge two consecutive defeats. Yan had her chances at the top of the women’s strawweight division, losing to current champion Carla Esparza in 2021 and to No. 3 Marina Rodriguez through a split decision at UFC 272 in March. If Yan can land some punches, she may be able to right the ship in this duel of opposing fighting styles.
“I don’t think these girls will tap when I go to submit,” Dern remarked. “You don’t want to be harsh or watch others get harmed, but if she could cut me open or do whatever she wanted, she would. I’m constantly thinking, ‘technique, technique.’ If I immediately take it off without giving them a chance to tap, I may pull their shoulder and require surgery or something similar. But, at the end of the day, we agreed to this. I settle for, ‘I’ll get her on the next one…’ if I give her time to consider. No, I need to do it. Be cruel.”
Xiaonan has only been submitted once in her career, falling to a rear naked choke in her fourth fight in Singapore in 2010.

Dern vs. Yan Fight Prediction:
Dern is a high-risk defensive player. She also has a habit of willingly engaging in sloppy-hitting exchanges in situations where her grappling may provide her with a much simpler path to winning. Xiaonan possesses good movement and striking, but she can also rely on outmuscling opponents when they pressure her.
If the bout goes to the ground, Xiaonan will undoubtedly be unable to brute force her way out of clinches or scramble Dern. Assuming Xiaonan does not suddenly discover her power against high-level fighters and Dern does not simply chase Xiaonan while attempting to turn the fight into a brawl on the feet, it appears that the most important question heading into the fight is whether Dern scores the submission or wins on the cards.
- Mackenzie Dern was chosen by submission in Round 2.
