After amazing performances at the UIPM 2022 Youth World Championships, Sumin Shin of Korea and Moutaz Mohamed of Egypt have been crowned the new Under 19 world champions.
Today’s achievement completed a spectacular double for 16-year-old Shin (KOR), who had also become U17 world champion earlier in the week.
Mohamed (EGYindividual )’s gold medal and men’s team gold brought his country’s total to seven, and they added an eighth title in the final event, the U17 Mixed Relay.
France, Hungary, and Mexico also won medals on ‘Super Sunday,’ the competition’s last day, while Roman Popov won U19 individual silver for Ukraine.
Thirty-six U19 athletes became the first to compete over three days (Qualification / Semi-finals / Final) under the new elimination system intended for the Paris 2024 Olympic cycle. The combined championships featured almost 260 participants from 35 countries.
Women’s U19 2022 Modern Pentathlon European Championships Championship
Shin (KOR), who had just won the U17 title three days prior, came into the U19 showcase on the heels of a strong Fencing Ranking Round in which she topped the rankings with 25V/10D. She tacked on four Bonus Points just for good measure. Malak Ismail (EGY) and Jana Attia (EGY) were close behind with 24 and 23 victories, respectively.
Malgorzata Karbownik of Poland climbed the leadership with a stunning swim of 2min 14.90sec, with Ismail (EGY) the only other swimmer to break 2:20.
Ismail (EGY) began the Laser Run as the overall leader, only for the new boy on the block to outperform everyone else and leave everyone else vying for silver and bronze.
Shin (KOR) won gold by a 10-second lead over Ismail (EGY), despite a remarkable Laser Run performance of 11:30.16 from bronze winner Blanka Bauer (HUN), who almost grabbed Ismail (EGY) on the line.
Gabrielle Holland of the United Kingdom finished fourth, with Jiho Shin (KOR) and Dorina Dobronyi (HUN) rounding out the top six. Korea won the gold medal, Hungary took silver, and Egypt took bronze.
“I’m extremely delighted,” remarked gold medalist Shin (KOR). Laser Run was enjoyable, particularly my running. I was good at fencing and mediocre in swimming. Laser Run is my favorite discipline.
“My ambition is to earn an Olympic medal.” Woongtae Jun is my favorite athlete.”
Men’s U19 2022 Modern Pentathlon European Championships Final
The Ranking Round action was extremely tight, indicating a high level of Fencing, and Hubert Skibiak (POL) was eventually tied with Popov (UKR) on 23V/12D. Quinn Schultz of Canada scored six points in the Bonus Round on the strength of 22V/13D to remain in contention, while Mohamed (EGY) and compatriot Mazen Shaban (EGY) also won 22.
To the pleasure of local spectators, Matteo Bovenzi of Italy won the Swimming event with an outstanding performance of 1min 56.83sec, with Mohamed (EGY) finishing a distant second in 2:03.08 and Skibiak (POL) coming in third.
At the start of the Laser Run, barely 1sec separated leader Skibiak (POL) and Mohamed (EGY), with Popov (UKR) and Schultz (CAN) all within 10sec of the lead.
Mohamed (EGY), the U17 world champion in 2019, claimed the top spot on the podium with a time of 10:17.96, while Popov (UKR) earned a silver medal and pleasure from fans all around the world with a time of 10:29. Another medal was returned to North Africa when Mohamed Mohamed (EGY) defeated Etienne Clergeau and Diego Lavillat (FRA) in a two-pronged challenge to earn bronze.
Egypt won the gold medal, Korea took silver, and France took bronze.
“It feels great,” remarked gold medalist Mohamed (EGY). I was quite thrilled about this race, and I worked hard with my coaches, and every member of my family was rooting for me.
“It feels amazing to be a world champion again.” I finished third last year [after winning U17 gold in 2019]. My Laser Run is excellent, thanks to the excellent training I received from my instructor. I’d like to thank my federation, my family, my coaches, my friends, and everyone who helped me, as well as UIPM.
“My goal is to compete in the Olympic Games in Paris in 2024.”
Mixed Relay U17 2022 Modern Pentathlon European Championships
Egypt topped the podium once again at the end of an extraordinarily productive week, thanks to a tremendous Mixed Relay performance by Ganah Elgindy and Marwan Allam.
Poland (Hanna Jakubowska & Krystian Trepczyk) had the quickest Swimming performance of 2min 00.72sec, ahead of Turkey (Eda Ozrodop & Ahmet Onder) and France (Auge Leonie & Matthis Issaka), however the Laser Run saw a complete turnaround and a new podium emerge.
Egypt (Elgindy/Allam) finished 8 seconds ahead of silver medalists Emma Meszaros and Adam Peter of Hungary, while Mexico claimed their second medal of the competition with Gandhy Miranda and Daira Tavira taking bronze.
“It was a really great race, and the shooting and running felt so easy,” Elgindy (EGY) stated. “I told myself that I should give Marwen first place in order to get first place, and thank God that worked out today.”
“I was scared since the Hungarian girl was finishing well and I knew the Hungarian male finished before me yesterday,” Allam (EGY) explained, “but the second shooting was good and then for the second 600m I had some space.”
“God willing, I aspire to compete in the Olympic Games in 2028, and I know Ganah feels the same way.”

“We’ve just had eight days of competition in Lignano Sabbiadoro for the UIPM 2022 Youth World Championships for U19 and U17 athletes, and it was extraordinary to be back in Italy – one of the homes of Pentathlon,” said Rob Stull OLY, UIPM Executive Board Member and President of the NORCECA Modern Pentathlon Confederation.
“The competition itself was great; we were on the beach in Italy towards the end of summer, and the young athletes had a fantastic time.” We saw good performances from five continents and future stars here, two years before Paris 2024.
“Everyone had a fantastic day, and I’m sure the memories the kids will carry with them will be incredible.” I believe they will leave feeling energized and driven to pursue their goals in sport and in life.”
